HYPERION GROUP UNDERWRITING

INTRODUCTION

The underwriting arm of Hyperion was formed in 1998 when the Group’s first underwriting agency, DUAL Ibérica, was established in Madrid. An underwriting agency has a binding (or delegated) authority given by an insurer to grant cover on the insurer’s behalf within certain pre-agreed parameters. Underwriting agency businesses act as a virtual insurer, performing all of the functions typically performed by an insurer other than retaining the ultimate balance sheet risk. Hyperion operates underwriting agency businesses through Avant, CFC Underwriting, DUAL and VK Underwriting.

Avant

In December 2006 Hyperion entered in a commercial partnership with a Spanish Engineering Group to acquire a major share in Avant Garantías SL. Avant is based in Madrid and specialises in providing Extended Warranty insurance products to the motor industry. In 2007, after changing the management structure, Avant was officially registered with the Spanish regulatory authority as an underwriting agency.

CFC UNDERWRITING

CFC Underwriting was established in 2000 to take advantage of growing technology industry risks and is based in the Lloyd’s building in London. Although specialising in Liability insurance for technology businesses, it has remained flexible in its approach to underwriting risk and has developed new lines wherever an opportunity exists. In the USA, for example, it provides its broker clients with a Liability product designed to satisfy USA requirements for minimum insurance coverage of nursing homes.

DUAL

DUAL is the largest underwriting agency in Hyperion and consists of eight offices in Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and Australia. These offices are supported by a headquarters in London, DUAL International. Initially focusing on Directors & Officers and Professional Indemnity, it has broadened its offering to brokers with Pension Trustee Liability, Employment Practice Liability, and Commercial Crime and Fraud products. Its strategy has always been to sell insurance to low risk / low volatility assureds focusing on profitable underwriting.

VK UNDERWRITING

The origins of VK Underwriting date back to 2003, when a Miami-based intermediary established a contract to underwrite Directors & Officers Liability insurance on behalf of several prominent insurance providers. Over the last five years, the company has expanded its product offering to include a full suite of Liability products. VK Underwriting continues to focus on SME companies domiciled mostly in Latin America.

HYPERION GROUP BROKING

INTRODUCTION

Insurance broking was the foundation of the Hyperion Insurance Group with the formation of Howden Insurance Brokers in 1994. From one operation in London, the network of offices has grown to now number 39 worldwide. Over the past 14 years, the Group broking operations have grown exponentially across the world as outstanding local insurance professionals have been identified in their territories.

HOWDEN BROKING GROUP

The Howden Broking Group comprises wholesale, retail and reinsurance broking models, with its principle subsidiary located at Lloyd’s of London. Retail brokers distribute directly to the ultimate insured whereas wholesale brokers place business generated by other insurance brokers in the London and other international insurance markets. Reinsurance broking is the process of placing insurance for insurance companies in order to spread the risk for the direct insurer. These methods of broking provide their own distinct advantages to the Group and allow complete flexibility when entering a new territory or product line.

Initially the Group’s main focus was the two mutually compatible product lines of Professional Indemnity insurance and Directors & Officers Liability insurance. However, client demand for the same professional approach to other insurance lines has grown. Howden has been quick to meet these needs and is now a global provider of a range of specialist insurances.
